These Will Be the Winners: My Early Oscar Predictions (November 2010)

Having read websites such as The Film Experience and In Contention, I have a pretty good idea of what the field of play is going to be like at the Oscars (pre-nominations). So here goes:

Best Picture: The Social Network

I have a strong feeling about Toy Story 3 as well. Inception may have an outside chance.

Best Actor: Colin Firth, The King's Speech

Best Actress: Natalie Portman, Black Swan

Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, The Fighter

Best Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit

Best Director: David Fincher, The Social Network

Best Original Screenplay: Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, The Kids Are All Right

Best Adapted Screenplay: Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network

This is a lock. People haven't stopped talking about Sorkin's script, and even if The Social Network doesn't come out on top on Oscar night, this most certainly will.

So far, this seems like a pretty safe list for the main awards, especially since Colin Firth gave a great performance last year, but lost out to Jeff Bridges, who himself was being rewarded for past roles as much as for his current one.

Toy Story 3 will win best animated movie, and Inception will win in the special effects categories, but, like you, I think this is David Fincher's year.

Toy Story 3 of those being speculated is the most deserving of best picture (though The Social Network is very solid). As you say, it will collect its honors in the animation category. I feel bad for Sylvain Chomet, whose "The Illusionist" is considered to be a masterpiece and who is up for the animation Oscar in all of the wrong years (last time it was "The Triplets of Belleville" losing to "Finding Nemo").

As far as the safeness goes, I'm a little unsure about Portman and Steinfeld.

I would love to see some big upsets this year. If Javier Bardem (though I haven't seen Biutiful, it looks incredible) beat out apparent lock Robert Duvall for a nomination, that would be crazy.
